Roofing Tips For a long-lasting roof life.

Safety First.

1 Roof Must Breathe.

Proper ventilation, Without it heat and moisture can cause sheathing and rafting to rot, roof materials to buckle, and insulation to lose effectiveness. This will cause your overall roofing system to be ineffective. Big No No, professional maintenance, and periodical roof inspection can help you to avoid costly major issues.

2. Inspecting Roofing  Materials

Poor Quality Materials, Faulty Installation or Cracks can lead to big roof disasters. Sometimes shingles are faulty and will begin to crack after they've been nailed down. Faulty installation with nails and shingles can also play a big part in leaks. Nails could be nailed too low and it will start pushing back up. Make sure to always check the merchandise before getting on the roof.

3. Inspect For Missing Shingles

Roofing with shingles means these are separate pieces. Each one has durability questions of its own to resolve. One shingle might be fine, but another could be beyond repair. You have to analyze each shingle and see which one is doing well.

With shingles, the biggest concern is looking and noticing they are gone. The weather could result in the shingles falling out. It happens when they are not solidly in place. Inspect for those missing shingles because once one goes out, the rest will follow. It is a natural reaction, cause, and effect, from high wind storms.

4. Clean Your Gutters

Despite what many homeowners think, your gutters serve an incredibly important purpose for your home, and it only becomes more important as time goes on.

Your gutters help to channel water off of your roof and away from your home’s foundation, but they can only do this if they are kept clean and clear of any debris.

With all of the leaves that will be falling in the coming months, it pays to make sure that you are keeping your gutters cleaned out so you don’t end up with standing water on top of your roof.

Standing water on your roof is incredibly dangerous, as it can seep up under your shingles and down into your attic, or even cause structural damage if there is too much of it and your roof can’t support the weight.

Also, if your gutters become so clogged that water can’t get through, the additional weight could tear the gutters away from your house entirely, doing a great deal of damage in the process.

5.Bad Chimney or wall flashings

Flashings are one of the most important parts of any roofing system!

A bad flashing can be spotted by lifted or raised shingles near any wall or chimney.

One very easy way to spot a bad flashing rusted or lose counter flashing around your chimney or walls.

Flashings are very important and hard to notice if they are leaking, the reason being is that most of the time the water infiltrates the interior walls and is not able to be seen from inside of the house. This is dangerous to the homeowner because it can go without being noticed for months and sometimes years before the insulation in the wall becomes so moist that it starts to mold causing a musty basement scent.

6. Use Ice and Water Membrane Where Appropriate

An ice and water membrane is an impermeable rubberized fabric that is used to double-guard against moisture penetration. It is a good idea to use this to line valleys and the first few feet of the roof deck along eaves. And it may be mandatory in regions with freezing winter temperatures, where ice dams are a likelihood.

7. High Wind Considerations

In areas where high winds are likely, it is a good idea to use shingles with a reinforced nailing strip area. These strips will increase wind uplift resistance up to 110 mph. As a general guide, a minimum of four No. 9 1 1/2-inch hex head screws must be used when shingles are installed in high wind areas.
